Sound Sleep

HANDS ON HEALING: Sound Sleep by Katherine Griffin Tossing and turning too much? Massage can help. It switches off the sympathetic nervous system, which makes the body hypervigilant, and switches on the parasympathetic system, which calms things down. So a massaged body is likely to be toting around less tension and may have an easier time slipping off to sleep than a non massaged one. Fussy babies, restless children, and stressed-out adults all sleep more peacefully after massage, institute studies have shown. In one study of children and adolescents hospitalized with depression, those who got a 30-minute massage daily for five days slept longer and more soundly than did another group who watched a relaxing videotape. Following ten days of massage therapy, adults with chronic fatigue syndrome also sleep better. |
